What is Round Table?

In short... Round Table is a charitable organisation for (youngish) men upto the age of 45. It is an international organisation which has been around for 80 years... and Airdrie has had a round table for 50 of those. The really great thing about Round Table is that it is organised locally for local causes... not only for the benefit of well known national charities, but mostly for local people with a need.

A little bit of History...
Round Table was started in 1927 by Louis Marchesi. He was a Rotarian who felt that something more dynamic was required for younger men... so he started Round Table. Round Table owes nothing to Arthurian Legend, deriving both its title and its maxim from a speech made to the British Industries Fair in 1927 by the then Prince of Wales - 'The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, ADOPT methods that have proved so sound in the past, ADAPT them to the changing needs of the times and wherever possible, IMPROVE them'. To find out more detail of the history of Round Table see About Round Table on the RTBI Web Site Round Table has a set of objectives, Called Aims and Objects...

1. To develop the acquaintance of young men through the medium of their various occupations.
2. To emphasise the fact that one’s calling offers an excellent medium of service to the community
3. To cultivate the highest ideals in the Business, Professional and civic traditions.
4. To recognise the worthiness of all legitimate occupations and to dignify each his own by precept and example.
5. To further the establishment of peace and goodwill in international relationships.
6. To further these objects by meetings lectures, discussions and other activities.

What Do We Actually Do?
It's quite simple, really. We meet regularly during the year (see below for details) to discuss requests for donations or assistance as well as Table business such as membership, organising social events etc. In doing this we also like to have a laugh, a beer and generally socialise. We also organise outside visits, some sporting events, days out etc. Last year these visits ranged from a trip to Gibraltar to some white water rafting and canyon walking in Scotland. We raise funds for good causes in the local area by various means such as taking our Santa's Sleigh around the streets at Christmas, sending out letters from Santa and holding social events such as 70's nights, ceilidhs etc. Although fun and friendship are high on the agenda, there is a serious element to what we do... local people give us their money and it is our responsibility to deal with it properly and try to put it to good use on their behalf.

Meetings... Where and When?
We meet twice a month between September and June, on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Normally we meet at the Tudor Hotel in Airdrie (you can see the Round Table insignia on the main entrance and our Chairman's Board in the foyer). Visitors will be more than welcome to come along to one of our meetings and introduce themselves. However, please check that the meeting is on as sometimes, due to other activities or business commitments, we may be meeting in a different location.

How Do I Become a Member?
After attending as a guest for a time, potential members are invited to join. There are no barriers regarding one's political, religious, occupational or marital status and the only qualification is to be male, over 18 and under 45.
